Burnout isn’t just about being tired.
For neurodivergent people, burnout can feel like your entire system shutting down.
You might notice:
- exhaustion that doesn’t improve with rest
- difficulty doing things you used to handle
- increased sensitivity to noise, light, or interaction
- more shutdown, avoidance, or irritability
- feeling disconnected or numb
Sometimes it gets mistaken for depression. And while they can overlap, neurodivergent burnout often has different roots.
It can come from:
- long-term masking
- constant sensory overload
- pushing yourself to meet expectations that don’t fit
- not having enough recovery time
You may have been functioning at a high level for a long time—until suddenly you can’t anymore.
That doesn’t mean you’ve failed.
It means your system has been under more strain than it can sustain.
Recovery from burnout isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about:
- reducing demands
- understanding your limits
- creating space for your brain to recover
And most importantly—learning that your needs are valid.
