“High-functioning” is often meant as a compliment.
But for many people, it doesn’t feel that way.
It usually means:
- you’re managing to meet expectations
- you look like you’re doing okay
- other people assume you don’t need help
What it doesn’t show is:
- how much effort it takes
- how overwhelmed you feel underneath
- how close you are to burnout
You might be:
- holding everything together at work or school
- then completely exhausted at home
- constantly anxious about keeping up
- afraid that if you slow down, everything will fall apart
Being high-functioning doesn’t mean things are easy.
It often means you’ve learned how to push through—at a cost.
You deserve support before things fall apart, not just after.
